Do you know your personal learning style? I am nocturnal (meaning I am a night owl). I do not like early morning appointments or classes. I am my most productive during the afternoon and evening hours. And I like to read at night. I have poor eye sight so I need bright light or to sit near a window when I read. My study space must be neat and organized with a minimal amount of noise. I prefer no music when I study. I have just described my peak learning times and my ideal learning environment. These are all clues that indicate my personal learning style.
You have become serious about passing the ASVAB exam and that requires study. Identifying and taking advantage of your personal learning style will enable you to master the ASVAB material. Start by identifying your peak learning times and some of the elements that makeup your ideal learning environment.
- What time of day are you most productive?
- Are you an early riser?
- Are you a night owl?
- Are you full of energy in the afternoon?
- Where would you like your learning place to be located?
- What kind of lighting and acoustics would you like?
- What kind of equipment would you like?
- What kind of furniture would you like?
The key is to create a study schedule that fits your peak performance times. And then dedicate a certain space to learning and arrange it to your specifications. This will enable you to absorb and retain more information because your mind is more focused. And your learning will become more efficient. It can also mean fewer interruptions from other people.
Suppose you cannot afford to create your ideal learning environment. Then visit your local libraries. Explore the public and college libraries in your city. The ideal learning environment may already exist.
