Passing the ASVAB

What It Takes To Accomplish Your Goal

If you are reading this I will assume that one of your goals is to pass the ASVAB exam. Often when a person first sets a goal he or she is so excited and amped-up. Think back to when you made your New Year’s Resolution. You believe that your goal is obtainable. You feel happy because you have not taken any action. Your goal is still only a thought in your mind.

Let’s fast forward to a few weeks after you start to take action. You might begin to ask yourself questions like, “Why am I doing this?” Likewise, you might start to think that the journey towards your goal is taking up too much of your time. Or that the goal you set is much harder than you originally thought it would be.

So instead of continuing to work towards your goal you make excuses and come up with reasons why you cannot continue the work. You convince yourself that you do not have enough time or money to complete your goal. Or else, you decide that you are too tired to work on your goal today and you will work on it tomorrow. But tomorrow never comes. Therefore, you do not reach your desired goal. Furthermore, your goal has now become a wish.

Sacrifice is always required in order to reach your goal and you must pay in advance. The greater the goal, the greater the sacrifice. Sacrifice comes in many forms. This includes time spent preparing; money paid out for education and training. You may have to forgo hanging out with family and friends in order to learn a new skill set. Maybe you need to save money but would rather eat out with friends. You might need to get up earlier than normal or stay up later than you would like in order to study.

Along with a willingness to sacrifice you need perseverance and tenacity.  A “can do” attitude is extremely important. You must develop the ability to keep your eye on your goal despite whatever obstacle is in your path. And rest assured, there will be big and small obstacles along the path towards your goal. The road you must travel in order to reach your goal will rarely be smooth. At times it may seem like the goal you set is almost impossible to reach. But once you complete the journey and reach your goal, the self-pride you feel cannot be measured or put into words.

  1. Thank you! I’m just starting out and at times it seems impossible. But as the picture above proves, there are so many who came before me and sacrifice so much, I can’t and I won’t give up.
